Johnny Cash 60's Rebel

Johnny Cash: Political Conflict and Rebellion in the 1960s

                                                    Thursday, February 9

Dr. Daniel Geary, Lecturer in History at Trinity College Dublin, will speak at the Algonquin Club on Thursday evening, February 9, 2012, about the live prison recordings of Johnny Cash. He will situate these uniquely gritty and genuine recordings (which were vividly recreated in the 2005 film Walk the Line, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash and  Best Actress Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon as his wife, June Carter) in the historical context of political conflict and rebellion of the 1960s. The lecture and following question-and-answer period are the third in a continuing series of such events at the Algonquin Club sponsored by the TCD Boston Alumni Network and open to TCD alumni, all Algonquin Club members, members of other alumni clubs and associations and their respective guests.  Wine, beer, soft drinks, bottled water and light snacks will be served.

Dr. Geary’s research interest in this material grew out of a class he teaches at Trinity College Dublin. In his remarks, he will also reflect on his experiences as an American teaching U.S. history in Ireland.

Since 2008, Daniel Geary has been the Mark Pigott Lecturer in U.S. History at Trinity College Dublin. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 2004. He specializes in twentieth-century U.S. history, with a particular focus on political movements and ideas since World War II. He is a regular commentator on American history and politics in Ireland, he has written for the Irish Times and has appeared on RTE television and radio. His first book was Radical Ambition: C. Wright Mills, the Left, and American Social Thought (University of California Press, 2009). http://www.tcd.ie/history/staff/gearyd.php
