Timeless Restoration

The Algonquin Club is pleased to announce the completion of the year-long restoration of the three stained glass windows in the Main Stairwell. The cleaning and restoration work was performed by Jim Anderson Stained Glass in its studios in Boston.

The Foundation undertook the restoration based on a warning from a leading Boston preservationist the the lead framework was in danger of collapsing. When the Club House opened in 1888, the stained glass was lit by a skylight in the ceiling of the Atrium. The skylight was removed in the 1950's.

Dedicated to Preservation

The foundation’s earlier preservation project was the restoration at the front steps. Like the stained glass windows, the lantern date to 1888.

The City of Boston subsequently adapted the lantern design for the street lights along Commonwealth Avenue and copies of the lanterns may be found in Winthrop Square and on the exterior walls of the Four Seasons
